Director of Development Positon at
Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School, Palo Alto, CA
Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School - a thriving, pluralistic school
community founded in 1990 and situated on a beautiful campus in
Palo Alto, California - seeks a dynamic and collaborative senior
development professional with strong interpersonal skills,
thoughtful strategic vision and a successful track record in
spearheading organizational philanthropic engagement to serve as
its Director of Development.
The successful candidate will oversee and guide the school's
fundraising efforts, reporting directly to the Head of School and
working closely with the senior operations team including the Chief
Financial Officer, Director of Admission and the Marketing Manager.
This cross-departmental collaboration is responsible for the
school's financial health and sustainability as well as projecting
a compelling vision of our school's vibrance, impact, and bright
future.
Additionally, the Director of Development will partner with the
Development Committee Chair and work with the Board President(s) as
well as other key lay leaders while also cultivating and stewarding
relationships with current and prospective donors, grant funders,
and volunteers.
The Director of Development will supervise and mentor a Development
Associate / Alumni Coordinator.
This is a 12-month, exempt, salaried position, with competitive
compensation and full benefits.
Essential Responsibilities:
--- Lead and build-upon the school's on-going development
activities including the annual Hausner Fund drive, major gifts
program, Spring Benefit, donor recognition, alumni and alumni
parent outreach, grandparent engagement, grants and institutional
donor management, as well as any future capital or endowment
campaigns that the school undertakes.
--- Work with the Development Committee to recommend annual
fundraising goals to the board in its budgeting cycle AND work with
the Committee to design and implement an annual development plan
tied to those revenue goals. Contribute collaboratively to the
school's long-term strategic planning process.
--- Consistently deliver an innovative, creative and exceptional
donor experience. Ensure that all major donor prospects and major
donors are well-informed, acknowledged in meaningful ways and
appreciated in an appropriate manner throughout the year
--- Secure in person donor meetings and solicitations to establish
or strengthen donor relationships for long term support. Solicit
and secure gifts at multiple levels including multi-year gifts.
--- Cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, directly soliciting
gifts, managing donor information with confidentiality and
accuracy, engaging with current supporters to help open doors to
prospective givers, undertaking thoughtful research to deepen
insight into potential philanthropic investors, managing
acknowledgement of all contributions, and coordinating special
recognition at different levels of giving, always placing a premium
on establishing and sustaining strong relationships.
--- Develop a pipeline of prospects for each fundraising strategy,
including major gift giving, alumni and alumni family giving,
grandparent giving, and legacy giving.
--- Research opportunities for corporate sponsorships and grants
and write and manage all grant applications, from proposal through
acceptance, follow-up, and evaluation.
--- Provide skilled upward leadership for the Development Committee
including close partnership with the Committee Chair in creating
goals and plans, setting meeting agendas, providing training to
committee members, and participating in meetings.
--- Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all pledges and
donations in the development database and ensure meticulous
financial reporting to the Development Committee and the Board.
Monthly reconciliation with Finance and ongoing coordination with
the CFO on annual budgeting, audits, and responsibility for
overseeing the Development budget.
--- Lead the work of the Development Committee, together with the
Development Committee Chair appointed by the Board President,
setting meeting agendas, running meetings, distributing the minutes
and action items of those meetings, and both managing and
participating fully in the efforts of the committee.
--- Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all pledges and
donations and, together with the Assistant Head of School for
Finance and Operations, insure meticulous financial reporting.
--- Prepare analytical reports related to all functions of the
school's development efforts and present summaries of these to the
Development Committee and the Committee Chair.
--- Work with the Marketing Manager to maintain a mission-driven
communications plan that includes formulation of the case for
giving; development of materials that convey the school's strategic
vision, its uniqueness, and impact; effective use of social media;
and preparation of Annual Reports.
--- Work with the Director of Admission to welcome new families and
to educate both prospective and current families on the
opportunities available to support the school and on the importance
of doing so.
--- Supervise the Development Associate / Alumni Coordinator and
work with this staff member to ensure well-maintained databases,
accurate reporting and to develop and execute the school's alumni
and alumni family relations efforts.
--- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Qualifications:
--- Bachelor's degree, with advanced degree preferred
--- Five plus years of experience in fundraising, as a paid staff
person or volunteer leader, with demonstrated experience in
fostering relationships with major donors and asking for
philanthropic gifts
--- Previous management experience managing all functions of a
Development office, including running an annual campaign, planning
annual events, applying for grants, seeking corporate sponsorships,
cultivating and stewarding relationships with donors, and
developing strategic plans for long-term fundraising
--- Ability to enlist, motivate, and coordinate the efforts of
volunteers, including members of the Board of Directors,
Development Committee, and Spring Benefit Committee.
--- Familiarity with independent school education preferred,
ideally Jewish day school education
--- Deep connection to the mission of the school and clear
appreciation for its impact
--- Strong verbal and written communication skills, nurtured by
both curiosity and conviction, along with excellent presentation
skills
--- Experience with supervising and mentoring direct reports
preferred
--- Demonstrated experience in using CRMs and/or fundraising
databases and spreadsheets.
--- Adept in utilizing web-based research tools to conduct
extensive individual and institutional donor research.
--- Active engagement in professional learning, including currency
with best practices
--- Sensitivity and discretion are required given the confidential
and sensitive information the Director of Development oversees
--- Creativity and flexibility, attention to detail and ability to
manage competing priorities, with sense of humor and
customer-orientation a must

high
--- May work in varied inclement outside weather conditions during
special activities
